Product Introduction

The 0-Year-Old Infant Presence Detection Surrogate – Breathing-Only Version is a dedicated in-cabin test device designed for the development, validation, and performance assessment of Child Presence Detection systems for newborn and infant occupant scenarios.

Representing the body size, posture characteristics, and respiration features of a typical 0-year-old infant, this surrogate provides a repeatable and controllable platform for evaluating CPD systems under low-motion and weak-signal conditions commonly found in infant detection scenarios.

This version focuses on programmable abdominal respiration simulation only. It does not include heartbeat simulation, head motion, limb motion, eye-blink control, or body temperature control. The simplified configuration is especially suitable for validating the fundamental detection capability of radar-, Wi-Fi-, UWB-, vision-, and multi-sensor-fusion-based CPD systems.

The surrogate can generate respiration-related radar micro-Doppler signatures similar to those produced by real infants during breathing and provides representative radar cross-section characteristics for infant occupant detection. It supports testing requirements for Euro NCAP, C-NCAP, i-VISTA, and customized CPD assessment protocols.

Key Features

  • Anthropometric representation of a 0-year-old infant
  • Dedicated breathing-only configuration
  • Programmable abdominal respiration simulation
  • Adjustable respiratory rate and amplitude
  • Respiration-related radar micro-Doppler response generation
  • Representative radar cross-section characteristics of real infants
  • Compatible with 5 GHz Wi-Fi sensing, UWB, 24 GHz radar, 60 GHz radar, 140 GHz radar, 4D imaging radar, vision-based sensing, and multi-sensor fusion systems
  • Suitable for rear-facing child seat, infant carrier, sleeping posture, partially covered condition, and low-motion infant detection scenarios
  • Supports Euro NCAP, C-NCAP, i-VISTA, and customized CPD test protocols

Physiological Simulation

The breathing-only surrogate provides adjustable respiration parameters to reproduce different infant breathing states inside the vehicle cabin.

  • Respiratory rate: 10–60 bpm, adjustable
  • Respiratory amplitude: 1–20 mm, adjustable
  • Respiratory mode: abdominal breathing
  • Breathing pattern: fixed, programmable, random, periodic, or event-triggered

This configuration enables the simulation of quiet sleep, shallow breathing, weak breathing, irregular breathing, and temporary breathing pauses, providing challenging test conditions for CPD sensors and algorithms.

The breathing-only version does not include:

  • Heartbeat simulation
  • Head motion
  • Arm motion
  • Leg motion
  • Eye-blink control
  • Body temperature control

Advanced Breathing Simulation

9 Intelligent Control Modes

The surrogate incorporates a programmable breathing control system with nine intelligent breathing modes. Compared with conventional fixed-pattern respiration devices, it can reproduce dynamic variations in respiratory rate and amplitude, enabling more realistic and repeatable infant breathing simulation.

The breathing control modes include:

  1. Fixed breathing rate with increasing amplitude
  2. Fixed amplitude with increasing breathing rate
  3. Fixed breathing rate with amplitude increasing and then decreasing
  4. Fixed amplitude with breathing rate increasing and then decreasing
  5. Fixed breathing rate with randomly fluctuating amplitude
  6. Fixed amplitude with randomly fluctuating breathing rate
  7. Random variation of both breathing rate and amplitude within defined limits
  8. Occasional random breaths inserted during normal breathing
  9. Occasional breathing pauses inserted during normal breathing, with adjustable pause frequency

These modes support the simulation of regular infant breathing, shallow breathing, weak respiration, irregular breathing, deep sleep, and apnea-like pauses. They are particularly useful for evaluating CPD systems under low-motion, weak-signal, or highly variable respiration conditions.
